Queering Economics: Diversity and Inclusion in the Dismal Science

Join us for our fifth session with Michael Martell, Associate Professor of Economics at Bard College, on Tuesday, April 16th, from 5pm to 6pm in the Levy Conference Room, or on Zoom. Mainstream economic theory has narrowed over the last several decades. Despite efforts to diversify who are economists, the field remains the least diverse of all the social sciences. We examine the link between economic theory and the identity of economists. Our analysis is based on qualitative interviews with a diverse group of LGBTQ+ economists at different stages of their careers. We bring together the work and ideas of feminist and stratification economists to understand the status and experience of LGBTQ+ individuals in the profession. We marshal an intersectional call to action for the discipline to recruit and retain a more diverse group of economists. The strategies we propose are based on the perspectives of our interviewees. Their perspectives contribute to a fuller understanding of how the toxicity of the culture in academic economics affects how LGBTQ+ individuals navigate the profession and the world.

Michael Martell is an Associate Professor of Economics at Bard College. His teaching and research interests include labor, applied microeconomics, economics of inequality, feminist economics, and economic development. He has served as an economist in the Office of the Assistant Secretary of Labor for Safety and Health, US Department of Labor; at the Office of Regulatory Analysis, US Occupational Safety and Health Administration; and at the Office of Safety and Health Statistics, US Bureau of Labor Statistics. He has been at Bard since 2016.
